During Easter, schools in Bergen have their annual break in week 16. From April 14th to 21st, you might notice more people out and about in the city, although many Norwegian families travel to other parts of the country to visit loved ones or relax at their cabins. Founded in 1994, Swing’n’Sweet Jazzklubb has around 130 members and hosts jazz cafés at Ole Bull Scene on Saturdays, running from the first Saturday in September until May 17th. On April 5th, the band Gymnos will perform modern acoustic jazz, while on April 26th, Soria will take the stage with jazz infused with Latin influences.

Bergen hosts One Ocean Week, a week with over 150 events, dedicated to the ocean and sustainable ways to utilize it. Through talks, debates, and various activities, the week highlights the importance of protecting and preserving marine resources.
During this week the University Museum has a temporary exhibition called “Elida, the poisoned whale”. This exhibition is about a whale that was found dead in 2021 with record-high levels of environmental toxins in her body.
Seafood takes center stage during this week, with many restaurants in Bergen offering special discounts. The 5th and 6h of April the Bergen Fish Market and Bergen Food Festival have food stalls at Festningskaien where the entrance is free and there are different activities inside, like taste tests, seafood courses and cooking activities. Are you in the mood for a bit of a different cinema experience? Visit Cinemateket and watch one of the first Norwegian “påskekrim” movies. Påskekrim (directly translated easter crime) is when Norwegians watch and read a lot of crime shows/novels during Easter.
The silent film ‘Bergenstoget plyndret i natt’ (directly translated: Bergen train looted last night) is a novel written in 1923 and was written by Nordahl Grieg and Nils Lie under the pseudonym Jonatan Jerv. In 1928 is was adapted to a Norwegian-German silent film.
The film will be shown from Cinemateket’s 108-year-old coal projector and a pianist will accompany the film. What a unique way to experience an old movie!

If your little one is under a year old, you can visit the baby cinema. The lights stay on, making it easy to move in and out, and talking, laughing, and even crying are completely welcome—just as babies do! There’s no need to worry about noise since it’s all part of the experience. Enjoy a movie with your baby in a room full of other parents and their little ones—what a wonderful way to spend a Tuesday!
