Inside Mathallen in Bergen

Bergen Fish Market

Fisketorget, Bergen’s iconic Fish Market, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. First mentioned in 1278, it was originally located near St. Nikolai’s Church. In 1558, Christoffer Valkendorf ordered its relocation closer to its current site to support the city’s growing trade. This move placed it along Vågen’s bustling waterfront, where it became a key hub for fresh fish sold directly from boats.

By the 20th century, Fisketorget had expanded beyond fish, adding Blomstertorget, a flower market, in 1923, and a dedicated fruit and vegetable section to the east. In 1972, city development plans reduced its size, sparking local protests and marking a shift in the area’s commercial landscape.
